This is the \u00a0speech I gave at Valbella Restaurant at the conclusion of our fantastic 41st Carnevale \u00a0after we had seen the Broadway musical, “Hamilton.’ \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

**********************************<\/p>\n

Tonight reminded me of the phrase – \u201cOn such a night as this\u201d
\nFrom Shakespeare\u2019s, The Merchant of Venice – Act V scene 1.
\nI was always struck by the 1973 production, directed by my mentor, Ellis Rabb at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center. He placed the two lovers on the Lido in Venice, 1960\u2019s Jet-set Italy – very Felliniesque. \u00a0Lounging on their hotel beach chairs the two lovers look up at the night sky and try to verbally outdo each other with classical allusions:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The moon shines bright.<\/p>\n

On such a night like this,
\nwhen the wind blew the trees<\/p>\n

so gently that they didn\u2019t make a sound,
\nme thinks Troilus climbed
\nup onto the walls of Troy
\nand sighed for Cressida in the Greek camp.<\/p>\n

On such night like this,
\nThisbe saw the lion\u2019s shadow
\nand ran away in fear.<\/p>\n

On such night like this,
\nDido stood holding a willow branch
\non the seashore, begging her lover
\nto come back to her in Carthage.<\/p>\n

On such a night like this, Medea gathered\u00a0magic herbs to rejuvenate old Jason.<\/span><\/p>\n

On such a night like this, did Loretta steal away from Appalachia
\nDriving her way from Romney town to the City of Churches
\nall the way to Garfield Place.<\/p>\n

On such a night like this, young Anthony swore he loved her very much, stealing her heart with vows of love, but not one vow was true.<\/p>\n

On such a night like this, handsome Gary, in a bad mood, said outrageously wrong things about his husband lover, and he forgave him.<\/p>\n

On such a night like this, family and old friends have gathered round
\nOn a cold winter\u2019s night, for two score years in masks of revelry and
\nRibald play.<\/p>\n

I would out-night you more,
\nWith my perhaps clever verse and bastard Bard iambic pentameter\u00a0but\u00a0time has come to bid a sad adieu.<\/p>\n

So let us dance a merry last dance –<\/p>\n
